Inception (2010)

Director: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio
The plot revolves around a group of people who can enter others’ dreams to manipulate their consciousness. The protagonist must implant an idea into the target’s mind. To do this, he embarks on a perilous journey through multilayered dreams.

Waking Life (2001)

Director: Richard Linklater
Starring: Trevor Jack Brooks
This is more of a philosophical musing on consciousness, lucid dreams, and whether humans only exist in reality as we know it. The protagonist engages in numerous conversations, pondering concepts like freedom, reality, and perception. But the repetitive nature of the scenes makes him realize he might be stuck in a cycle of lucid dreaming.

Doctor Strange (2016)

Director: Scott Derrickson
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch
While this lucid dreaming movie doesn’t directly address lucid dreams, it does feature colorful and dynamic parallel dimensions that the protagonist explores. His initial experience in these dimensions is very similar to what one feels when entering a lucid dream. Strange explores the possibilities within these new realms, alters space, and gradually expands his perception.

Electric Dreams (2017, episode 5)

Director: David Farr and others
Starring: Steve Buscemi, Geraldine Chaplin and others
This anthology series is based on stories by Philip K. Dick, featuring worlds where the line between dreams and reality is blurred. Some episodes depict characters entering alternate dimensions and sometimes being deceived by their perceptions. These moments echo lucid dreaming. The series is helpful for beginners, as it illustrates how to work with reality in dreams and avoid common traps.

The Thirteenth Floor (1999)

Director: Josef Rusnak
Starring: Craig Bierko
This film follows characters who realize they are living in a hyper-realistic virtual world. It raises questions about the nature of reality and existence itself, evoking the sensation of lucid dreaming. The characters become aware they are in a constructed reality, much like a lucid dreamer realizing they are in a fantasy they can control.

Maniac (2018, mini-series)

Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga
Starring: Jonah Hill, Emma Stone
This movie tells a gripping story about an experiment involving controlled dreams. The protagonists travel through imagined worlds, though these journeys are not always pleasant and often force the protagonists to face their fears. Participants can alter reality, just like in lucid dreams, but not everyone learns how to do this effectively.

The Matrix (1999-2003)

Director: Lana and Lilly Wachowski
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne
The characters live in a virtual reality designed to control human perception. The protagonist gradually realizes he’s trapped in an artificial world and fights to break free. Over time, he becomes a “lucid dreamer” within the Matrix, awakening to distinguish the real world from the simulated one.

A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Director: Ava DuVernay
Starring: Storm Reid, Chris Pine
The film follows a young girl’s journey through dimensions where time and space are distorted, defying physical laws. She learns to control reality with her mind, mirroring a person who becomes lucid in their dreams and begins to manipulate their surroundings.

What Dreams May Come (1998)

Director: Vincent Ward
Starring: Robin Williams
Among films about lucid dreaming, this one is unique. After death, the protagonist finds himself in an afterlife crafted from his perceptions and memories. It parallels the experience of a lucid dreamer (though without the need to die). Throughout the film, he journeys through different layers of the afterlife, each governed by his imagination and emotions.

Anamnesis: The Memory (2015, TV-series)

Director: Brandon Azoo
Starring: Ben Hoffman, Emily Killian
This is a powerful lucid dreaming film about a man who has lost all memory of his past. Standard treatments fail, but he discovers a technology that allows him to relive moments from his past. Initially, these memories are distorted, but over time, they return to their original form. The film illustrates how the phase state can aid self-healing and emotional recovery.

House, M.D. «House’s Head» (2008)

Director: Greg Yaitanes
Starring: Hugh Laurie
In this episode, the protagonist must recall details of a traumatic accident while in a coma, which requires him to interact with his subconscious. Initially, he sees blurry images, but they become clearer over time. The experience mirrors the phase state, where people work to retrieve detailed memories layer by layer.

Rusideu Deurim (2017)

Director: Kim Joon-seong
Starring: Ko Soo
The film focuses on a group of people who practice lucid dreaming to confront their fears. As the story unfolds, they learn new techniques and refine old ones. The main character must achieve lucidity to engage in self-development and resolve internal conflicts. The film explores philosophical questions about the boundaries of reality, making it both engaging and thought-provoking.

Beyond the Edge (2018)

Director: Aleksandr Boguslavskiy, Francesco Cinquemani
Starring: Miloš Biković, Antonio Banderas
Similar to Inception, this film centers on a group of specialists who enter others’ dreams to control their lives. They can drive people insane, clear their minds, make them forget things, and plant obsessive ideas in their minds. Throughout their missions, they face situations that defy physical laws.

Falling Water (2016, TV-series)

Director: Jack Bender and others
Starring: David Ajala, Lizzie Brocheré
This intriguing series features characters who discover they can enter each other’s dreams to link their experiences. They access not just the past or imagined worlds but also the future. Each dreamer can influence the lives of the others, and in doing so, they gradually reveal hidden elements of their subconscious as they journey across the borderline between reality and dreams.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Starring: Ivana Baquero
This complex psychological film is about a young girl in post-Civil War Spain who retreats into a fantasy world to escape the brutality of the real world. She encounters mythical creatures and undergoes trials, blending her imagination with her reality. The story shows how lucid dreams can help people confront even their deepest fears.

Vanilla Sky (2001)

Director: Cameron Crowe
Starring: Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz
The protagonist struggles to discern between dreams and reality as he finds himself surrounded by illusions and distorted memories that become uncontrollable. He realizes he’s in a virtual reality and must find a way to wake up to distinguish between imagination and true events.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Director: Wes Craven
Starring: Heather Langenkamp, Johnny Depp
This classic horror film features a group of teens terrorized by a malevolent entity that harms them in their dreams. These characters must quickly learn to control themselves within their dreams to defend themselves. The boundary between dreams and reality is so blurred that it becomes hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Director: Michel Gondry
Starring: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet
The characters in this psychological film gradually lose their memories, and their emotional connections and shared moments are erased. However, in dreams, they relive fading experiences and emotions, highlighting the importance of every moment in reality and the desire to hold on to meaningful memories.

Sucker Punch (2011)

Director: Zack Snyder
Starring: Emily Browning
In this thriller, the protagonist finds herself in a medical facility with a sinister agenda. To escape her trauma, she enters a fantasy world where she controls the events and fights for her life. Despite the surreal nature of this world, it remains linked to reality. Her actions in the fantasy world influence the real world, showing the interplay between dreams and consciousness.

Paprika (2006, anime)

Director: Satoshi Kon
Starring: Megumi Hayashibara
This anime film is about technology that allows people to enter each other’s dreams. Originally used for treating psychological trauma, the tool is later employed to achieve personal goals or simply for fun. The protagonist navigates her own and others’ dreams, shaping reality within each one as she explores people’s hidden desires and fears.

Of course, films about lucid dreaming aren’t documentaries. They are the creations of directors and screenwriters. However, each year, new movies come out that allow us to explore different aspects of lucid dreaming. They are available to watch online in high quality, often for free.
